Call is out for teams to register for the annual Stellarton Homecoming golf tournament

Jeff Green believes the Stellarton Homecoming golf tournament will be in existence for a long time to come. “It’ll be around for as long as The Homecoming itself goes,” said Green, one of the organizers of the annual tournament, which takes place July 27 at Abercrombie Golf Club. Teams of four will contest for the title of 2017 Stellarton Homecoming Golf Tournament champions. When it started back in 1989, the tournament has always been organized by the 110 Northumberland Wing Air Force Club, where Green serves as president. “It means a lot for the Wing to be a part of it. I see it as a role for us in the community, to be seen as more than just a building in the town.” The new title sponsor is Archway Insurance Hayman, who bought the company from the Hayman family and has since agreed to continue to be involved; the tournament plaque itself is in memory of David Hayman, a businessman and the former fire chief in the town. “His family sponsored the tournament from the very beginning,” Green said. Tournament co-chair Harvey ‘Brother’ MacLeod said some people now living in other parts of the world plan their vacations around the Homecoming, which includes the golf tournament itself. “Every year, there are people who come home and play in this,” he said. “One group even comes home from Bangor, Maine, every year.” Individuals can sign up to play in the event and a team will be found for them. Cost to enter is $50 per person (Abercrombie club members will pay $40) and the fee includes a steak supper at the Wing following the golf.
