Libraries: a place to learn from others

- Holly MacLean is the community outreach assistant for Pictou County. Holly MacLean

When the word library comes up in conversation, many think about a place where they can borrow books, DVDs, magazines and other items. People often overlook the fact that their local library also provides access to equipment, resources and free programming. Libraries can also be a place to exchange ideas, share knowledge and keep informed. This summer in libraries throughout Pictou and Antigonish Counties, we welcome new community technology interns Jill, Joshua and Daniel to share their expertise with us and PARL library users by helping us with summer programming and in other ways as well!

Jill Morrison

Jill is the community technology intern for the New Glasgow, Westville and Stellarton libraries as well as co-hosting a bi-weekly summer story time with Trenton Recreation in the open-air park across from Trenton’s Town Hall. Heading into her second year at Bishops University in Quebec, she is specializing in neuroscience with a keen interest in music and how it affects the brain. Jill was drawn to the opportunity to work in a library because she loves helping people. She sees the library as one of her favourite places to be and has a passion for reading. She’s also an accomplished writer and vocalist, and will be president of her university’s English Literature Club when she returns to school in the fall. This summer is shaping up to be a busy one for her, as she’s in the midst of coordinating children’s programs in Westville and Stellarton, along with some additional programs in New Glasgow like her upcoming origami workshop on Friday, July 28 at 2 p.m.! She is also available for one-onone computer training sessions at the New Glasgow library by appointment only on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Please call the New Glasgow Library at (902) 752-8233 to make an appointment.

Joshua Young

Joshua Young is the new community technology intern working at both the Pictou and River John libraries this summer. He has just finished a year of study in computer science at Dalhousie University, and is eager to educate and assist the community with any of their technology needs. A computer hobbyist since his childhood, Josh hopes to pass on his love for learning and technology to the local youth. Circuitry, Lego robotics, and computer programming are all subjects he has in interest in teaching in interactive workshops with the kids. If you would like to schedule an appointment, Josh is available at the Pictou library (902-485-5021) on Tuesdays from 1 – 9 p.m., Wednesdays from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. His days in the River John Library are Mondays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Daniel Bekkers

Daniel is the community technology intern for the Antigonish People’s Place Library. A recent high school graduate, he currently plans on attending college in Halifax and pursuing a career in law enforcement. He’s excited to assist people in the one-onone technology training sessions (Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays) and is looking forward to gaining new experiences from the summer programs hosted at the library! Please call (902) 863-4276 to make a one-on-one technology mentoring appointment.
