New Glasgow youth assisting at air show
Anyone from Pictou County heading to the air show this weekend may recognize some familiar faces.
Members of the New Glasgow Police Youth Trooper program are headed to 14 Wing Greenwood on Friday to help with parking control.
Const. Ken MacDonald said the air show offers both experience for youth and provides the troop with an honorarium that helps keep their program operating.
“Not only is it a fantastic, educational and training opportunity, it’s also an excellent way for us to raise money,” he said, adding that the money goes towards things like training and equipment.
MacDonald said 12 people involved in the program are going to Greenwood. One group left on Wednesday to set up a base camp for the weekend. He said they often see a lot of people from Pictou County at the show.
Air Show Atlantic is taking place in Greenwood on Aug. 26 and 27, with acts such as the Canadian Forces Snowbirds; Canadian Armed Forces Parachute Team; Carol Pilon wingwalking around her Boeing Stearman Biplane; and the CF-18 Demonstration Team performing with their specially painted CF-188 Hornet commemorating the 150th anniversary of Confederation.
The show will also feature ground displays, including aircraft and pilots available to talk about their planes, an obstacle course and a display from the Royal Canadian Navy.
MacDonald also noted the troop, which is an organization for youth aged 13 to 18 years old, is accepting members.
They start meeting in September, wearing a uniform, practicing drills and working to achieve badges and awards for performance and certifications.
