Fundraising firefighters hit the road

- BY FRAM DINSHAW

Westville firefighters collecting funds for new equipment hit the road Saturday morning, setting up voluntary tolls for motorists wishing to donate cash.

Firefighters had four voluntary tolls set up around town, including one next to the community helipad, where second lieutenant Shaun MacLaughlin and his colleagues received generous donations from passing drivers.

“People are supporting us,” said MacLaughlin.

Money collected by firefighters will go into the Westville Fire and Rescue Department’s general accounts.

MacLaughlin said that some equipment was outdated and it was important to keep up-to-date with the latest technology in firefighting and rescue operations.

“The fire department can always use improvements,” said MacLaughlin.

Firefighters ran voluntary road tolls from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday.

“I’m just happy to see everyone out this morning, we’ve got a lot of traffic, a good day and nice weather, so things are busy, which is a great to see,” said MacLaughlin.

According to its Facebook page, Westville’s fire department is a 30-strong all-volunteer force serving a community of roughly 3,800 residents.

Their fundraiser came five days before the department holds its open house at the fire hall, running from 6-8 p.m. on Oct. 12.
