What makes a great Halloween costume? Local shoppers weigh in

- BY FRAM DINSHAW

Zombie masks. Superhero outfits. Witches’ cloaks.

Or just a creative and perhaps slightly twisted imagination can conjure up the best Halloween costumes like evil spirits rising from their graves.

And local shoppers at New Glasgow’s Value Village store are already getting into a ghostly groove 25 days before Halloween.

“It’s not really a costume but it’s like this mask and it has one big eyeball,” said little Lileigh Sutherland, out shopping with her parents and brother Saturday.

She also enjoyed zombie masks and witches’ broomsticks, happily picking one up and pretending to fly on it.

Lileigh’s older brother Rowan preferred batman and joker outfits, as well as ghosts and phantoms.

Such costumes were available aplenty at Value Village and the children’s mother Angie said the store – only about one year old – “definitely” had a good selection of Halloween costumes.

“I think accessories really make a lot of costumes,” said Angie, as Lileigh tried on a tiny top hat probably meant for a witch.

Items like hats and wigs could easily round out a convincing Halloween costume, according to Angie.

Her family’s Halloween shopping trip was her first to Value Village, describing the store as “a good experience.”

“You have lots of selections and you have used and new,” said Angie.

For shopper Mike Lord, the best Halloween costumes were original ones, hand-made Frankensteins, Egyptian mummies and

others that he described as “a little risqué.”

“Just use your imagination. Everything’s great as long as you have fun,” said Lord.

Helping customers have fun is Mary-Ellen Tobin, Value Village’s very own costume consultant.

“A great Halloween costume in my opinion is really what the customer wants,” said Tobin.

This means helping them select

new costumes or mixing and matching their own unique outfits from row upon row of scary clothing and accessories at Value Village.

“It sets us apart from the competition because we are literally working with you to get your costume that you want,” said Tobin.

She said that superheroes and witches were two popular and fast-selling costumes this year.
