Aim to be open by summer, with mostly local products
Entrepreneur plans to build store in Alma offering local produce and some specialty food items.
There’s something satisfying about being able to provide customers with a quality product.
At least that’s what Peter Zehr found when he operated a market-style business in Ontario.
Zehr and his family moved to Pictou County about six months ago and are now planning to build a store similar to one they had operated in Ontario.
The business is being built near Exit 20 off the Trans-Canada Highway in Alma across from Ross Fraser’s Auto Sales and not far from the former Magic Valley theme park.
His plans are for the market to include a variety of products such as local produce, honey and jams. They intend to source most of the products locally, he said, and will be processing some of their own meats such as sausage on site.
“I enjoy meeting people and providing a good product that people enjoy and keep coming back for,” he said.
The store will be approximately 8,400 square feet and is being constructed by Shady Lane. Zehr said they haven’t quite decided on a name for the business just yet. The goal is to have it constructed and open by mid to late summer.
He said part of what attracted the family to this area was the Mennonite church and they are looking forward to meeting more people in the community once the store opens.
