Singer-songwriter Martin returning to New Glasgow

- BY FRAM DINSHAW

Award-winning Maritime singer-songwriter Christina Martin is returning to New Glasgow on June 8 — back to a town she considers a second home.

Martin, who lives in Port Howe, is returning to her Maritime roots after successfully wrapping up her 44-date European tour. For her upcoming Canadian tour, she is teaming up with the worldrenowned Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in a campaign to help those with addictions and mental illness.

“It’s great to work for yourself, it’s great to create something and have people connect on that thing you put out there,” Martin told The News.

“It’s quite a powerful platform to be an artist.”

Her connection to New Glasgow is a personal one, as she was friends with the late Carlton Munroe, who served as program and events manager for the Town of New Glasgow and executive director of the New Glasgow Riverfront Jubilee.

Martin also has other friends in New Glasgow who have helped her along her musical journey, including the folks at Glasgow Square Theatre.

Notably, her New Glasgow show is the only concert she will play with her full band on this tour.

“Your community is incredibly supportive,” said Martin. “I feel like an old friend brought in because of your community’s key players.”

Martin’s musical career began in 1999, when she left her Atlantic Canadian home for Austin, Texas, and then Salzgitter in Germany. There, she worked on a commercial pop music project.

After returning to Austin in 2000, Martin continued writing songs and performing live music, launching her solo career in 2002. It was then she released her debut album ‘Pretty Things.’

In 2004, her songs were featured on the award-winning British-Canadian two-part drama Sex Traffic and the show Snakes and Ladders.

Martin’s 2008 album ‘Two Hearts’ propelled her to fame, scoring a No. 5 spot on the Much More Music Countdown list and tours across Canada, the United States and Ireland.

Back home, she sang on Parliament Hill in Ottawa for Queen Elizabeth II and performed a show with Canadian rock star Matt Hays.

Martin released her third album ‘I Can Too’ in 2010 and started building her own label Come Undone Records the following year.

She released her live album ‘House Concerts’ in 2011 followed by ‘Sleeping With a Stranger’ in 2012. This was followed by ‘It’ll Be Alright’ in 2015.

Sleeping With a Stranger won a 2016 ECMA for Pop Recording of the Year.

Her latest album is titled ‘Impossible to Hold’ and her current Canadian tour is in support of its release.

“I feel in part it chose me,” said Martin of her musical career and ongoing success.
