Johnny Walk names Lawson Breen honorary starter
The Johnny Walk is getting closer.
The annual event, part of the Johnny Miles Running Events weekend, will take place June 16 at Glasgow Square.
“This year, we are excited to welcome Lawson Breen as our honorary Walk starter,” said Debbie MacDonald, one of the event organizers.
“Lawson runs, swims and bikes and has participated in many triathlons and other events. He loves walking and biking and has even biked the Cabot Trail.”
Breen and his wife Heidi, MacDonald said, have passed their active lifestyle along to their children and grandchildren.
The planning team has plenty of surprises for walkers along the route, with giveaways at various points. There will be draw prizes at the conclusion of the walk, including a bike that has been donated by Pictou County Cycle.
The Heart and Stroke Foundation will be on hand this year, with pedometers to sample as part of their national ‘WalkAbout’ program.
“Our founder, Dr. John Williston, launched the Johnny Walk to ensure everyone could participate in an activity on Johnny Miles Weekend,” MacDonald added.
‘His mission as always about active living and he worked hard promoting this lifestyle in our community.”
There is no pre-determined length for the walk, as participants can decide on a distance they feel comfortable with.
Organizers of the Johnny Walk encourage everyone to take part, and to “bring along a walking buddy,” MacDonald added. “Choose the distance that suits your current ability and build on it for next year.” Registration will be at 8 p.m. on June 16 at Glasgow Square, with the Johnny Walk scheduled to start 30 minutes later.
