Albion fighter Matt Fraser wins up amateur record

Boxer has 18-4 mark after win at a Halifax boxing card

-

Matt Fraser is getting used to fighting international boxers.

The 17-year-old member of Albion Boxing Club recently put another notch on his holster last Friday, when he won a unanimous decision at a card in Halifax.

His opponent was Edgar Rojas, a six-time boxing champion in the state of Oklahoma.

“It was a tough fight, a big win for the kid,” said Albion club president Jim Worthen.

Fraser and Rojas split the first two rounds at the fight, which was held in front of about 350 people at Casino Nova Scotia.

“My coaches wanted to go and win the first round, to dominate,” said Fraser, who admitted that in the final two rounds. “My cardio caught up with me. That made the fight a lot closer in the second and third rounds. I could have gone to the body a lot more, too.”

His match being part of a 12bout card, Fraser won the opening round, but his opponent countered in the second.

“It all came down to the last three minutes,” Worthen said. “Matt used his combination punching and good defence to get the victory.”

Fraser, who has been training at the Trenton club for a couple of years, will head to Ireland later this month to fight at a big card in Belfast.

It will be his second straight

year at that event.

A member of Team Nova Scotia that will head to Red Deer, Alta. early next year for the 2019 Canada Winter Games, Fraser said he’s grown accustomed to fighting in bigger events.

“I get a little nervous, but that’s normal,” he said.
