‘A little visual reminder’

Trenton students paint rocks in honour of veterans

-

Don’t be surprised if you come across some beautifully-painted rocks in Trenton in the next couple weeks.

Students and staff at Trenton Elementary are the artists behind the rocks and the inspiration behind the public art project are the men and women in uniform who have fought to protect Canada.

With Remembrance Day quickly approaching, students found about 150 rocks and have been painting them red, green and black in honour of veterans. The entire school has taken part in the project.

Grade 2 teacher Hazel Sheehan said the goal was to get the students involved with a project that will make them think about the service that men and women have given to protect Canada. The students’ rocks will be placed in Trenton Park and staff will place the ones they paint in businesses around town.

“I hope it makes them think a little more about what they can do to support our forces,” Sheehan said. “I hope it makes them think when they go through the park and serves as a little visual reminder for them.”

Students in Sheehan’s class were busy painting on Nov. 2 and said they enjoyed the project.

“My favourite part was searching for the rocks,” Tatum MacKenzie said.

Evan Affleck also liked the project.

“My favourite part was painting the rocks,” he said, adding that it was difficult to get some of the edges.
