A call for volunteers

Salvation Army Christmas Kettle Campaign gets underway in Pictou County on Friday

The Salvation Army is preparing for another busy Christmas season and is calling out for volunteers.

“There’s many children in Pictou County that will go without if we don’t help to provide Christmas,” says Barb Cameron, a volunteer with the Salvation Army. “So it’s important that the Salvation Army steps up with community help.”

The national non-profit, which provides services and financial assistance for families in need, will be kicking off their Christmas Kettle Campaign in Pictou at the Highland Square Mall on the evening of Nov. 16.

Cameron has been volunteering with The Salvation Army for many years now.

“My family depended on the Salvation Army when I was a child, so for me now it’s just about giving back,” she said. “It makes you feel good to see the smiles on the moms’ and dads’ faces.”

The Christmas Kettle Campaign raises money for yearround Salvation Army projects and services, including the Christmas toy drive.

“This is the one-time fundraiser that we do in Pictou County that helps us throughout the whole year,” said Dion Durdle, community ministries co-ordinator with the Pictou Salvation Army.

Christmas Kettles will run from Nov. 19 until Christmas Eve. People wishing to volunteer can call 902-695-2188.

In Westville, where Cameron was volunteering on Nov. 13, people were coming to sign their families up for the Christmas toy drive.

“It’s important, because without us and the community, there would be kids without Christmas.”
