This time of year can get so busy for most of us. We get caught up in the stress of decorating our homes, baking dozens of sugar cookies and finding that ‘perfect gift’. The office parties, Christmas concerts and family gatherings slowly pile up, and before we know it our December calendars are booked solid. Shopping quickly becomes this daunting task that most of us dread – myself included. However this year, I’m challenging myself to get off the procrastination train, turn that dread into delight, and enjoy my holiday shopping experience by spending it in downtown Truro.

Our downtown is more vibrant than ever – We have so many unique and diverse shops and services. The farmer’s market is buzzing with excited vendors and happy customers every Saturday morning. The library and Civic Square provide us with beautiful indoor and outdoor spaces to spend our days. The restaurants and cafes are creating delicious, mouth-watering dishes and drinks daily… I could go on, but I’ll spare you. Clearly our downtown is thriving, so why not make the most out of your holiday shopping and soak up all that Truro has to offer.

With over 150 downtown fashion boutiques, jewelry and gift shops, home décor stores, spas, restaurants and cafés – one could easily spend a day getting all their holiday shopping completed, while also decompressing from the hustle and bustle of this busy season. Grab a friend and get cozy with a latte at one of our local cafés. Browse the shops on Prince Street and Inglis Place, where there truly is something for everyone; men’s and women’s fashions, hand-made local gifts, outdoor apparel, bike and skate shops, children’s boutiques, home apparel and so much more. Take a break and grab some lunch at one of our charming downtown restaurants and then in the afternoon, pamper yourself at a spa or salon. On Friday evenings from 6-8, catch a snowy wagon ride and enjoy the lights and music throughout the downtown core. Before you head home, save yourself some time and skip the baking. Head into a local bakery and stock your pantries with drool-worthy baked goods. From out of town? We’ve got you covered – stay at one of our downtown hotels, and receive hospitality like no other.

If the unique charm of downtown and variety of Truro shops hasn’t sold you, then let me give you a few reason of why you should spend your dollars here at home. First of all, our downtown business owners are THE BEST. They not only work in Truro, but they live here too. They’re your friends and neighbors, and have a vested interest in knowing how to serve you. They’re passionate about what they do and want to create the best experience for you this holiday season. By supporting local, more of your money will be kept in our local economy and in turn, our community will continue to grow. And lastly, by shopping in downtown Truro this year, you’re embracing what makes your community unique, celebrating what it has to offer, and sharing with others the beautiful town that we call home.

When asked why people should shop local in Truro this holiday season, Miriah Kearney, owner of My Home Mercantile, sums it up perfectly. “Downtown Truro has everything you need all in a walkable distance. From fashionable clothing stores, to unique gift stores, there is truly something for everyone. Pair shopping with delicious food and warm coffee shops, and there is no better place to be.”
