Give the gift of reading, this holiday season

- Jean Rozee is finance manager, Pictou-Antigonish Regional Library. Jean Rozee

As we approach Christmas, many are beginning the arduous task of finding that right gift for that someone special.

During the months of November and December the “Gift-a-Book” program is being offered in every branch.

If there is a book lover on your list, or a child, grandchild, niece or nephew, or your significant other, consider adopting a book and giving them the gift of reading. You can choose from a Wish List, or make a suggestion of your own.

You’ll receive a gift card that lets your loved one know this book was adopted and donated to their favourite library branch. Also, the book is put on hold for the recipient to read first.

Consider a contribution

This is also the time of year many people think about income taxes and how to end the year on a high note, whether it is contributing to an RRSP or, if you are a generous person, what charitable organization you can contribute to in order to make an impact.

The library is that charitable organization. With programs for all ages, it offers a variety of ways to use your money wisely. Consider a charitable gift to your library. A receipt for income tax will be issued to you, and it’s a way to make a difference in the community by supporting literacy.

Giving back

The library gives back to the community, too, in many ways. This holiday season the library is again thankful to be a partner with Spreading the Christmas Cheer in Pictou County.

Help make spirits bright in Pictou County by filling out and donating Christmas cards that will be distributed to those who might need some cheer this Christmas. Starting this week, you can drop off any cards you wish to give, at any of the libraries in Pictou County, until Dec. 7. Then a team of elves will be distributing these cards to local nursing homes and hospitals.

Craft programs

The library has many drop-in crafting programs where you can make a holiday card to give.

The New Glasgow Library has their monthly Get Crafty program on Thursday Nov. 22 at 6:30 p.m. This month, they will be making “one-of-a-kind” gift tags for holiday gifts. All supplies are provided and all are welcome, although children under age 12 require parental assistance.

For more information, contact the New Glasgow library at 902752-8233.

The Pictou Library will be hosting Santa’s workshop on Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., starting Nov. 24. Each week will feature a different holiday craft and starting this week they will be making Book Trees.

For more information on this or any other service provided by Pictou-Antigonish Regional Library, call or drop by any branch and the friendly, helpful staff will assist you.

While there, be sure to check out the latest books, DVDs, audio books, magazines, newspapers, and children’s’ section.

We have something, for everyone. See you at the library.
