Appetizers for the holiday season

- Ellen Greenan

December is almost here, which means the holidays are quickly approaching! And with the holidays come many parties, gatherings and festivities, where food is almost always front and centre.

The holidays are often a time for indulgence, and while it’s important to enjoy the food you eat and treat yourself a little over the holidays, keep in mind it doesn’t have to be all or nothing. You can partake in the festive foods you enjoy, while still trying to create an overall balance in what you eat. A few ways to maintain his balance include trying to eat foods from all the different food groups and also to make nutritious choices when you can, especially since these can often be limited this time of year.

Whether you are hosting a party, or attending one, try making a healthy appetizer or two to add to the mix. Having healthy options available is always helpful when trying to maintain balance the holidays are no exception.

Below are some examples of simple, delicious and nutritious holiday appetizers that are easy to whip up at this busy time of year:

■ Traditional guacamole with pomegranate seeds

■ Greek yogurt tzatziki dip

■ PC squash, kale and beet flatbread

■ Caprese kabobs — tomato, fresh basil and mozzarella

■ Crispy oven-roasted brussels sprouts

■ PC black bean hummus with tortilla chips

■ Cherry bruschetta with fresh basil (a change from the usual tomato version!)

■ Pear and Parmesan stuffed mushrooms

■ Homemade maple yogurt dip, served with fruit

More ways to incorporate more nutritious choices in your holiday fare include pairing your appetizers with a whole-grain bread or cracker (Triscuits are a great choice) and serving fruit and vegetables with a dip. Vegetables often take back seat at holiday parties, so when you do see them, add them to your plate! This will go a long way towards helping you maintain balance over the holidays.
