Veterans honoured at Thorburn Remembrance Day service
Union Presbyterian Church, Thorburn was filled to capacity as Remembrance Day 2018 was celebrated. The parade arrived at the church at 8:45 a.m. Following the singing of O’Canada, opening remarks were given by George MacLellan, who welcomed everyone.
Prayer of Remembrance was given by Elaine Sponagle. The hymn “Abide with me” was sung, followed by the lowering of the flag by Corp. Patrick Marshall. Boyde Macdonald read the names on the Honour Roll; the Last Post was sounded by bugular Connor Wilde, followed by two minutes silence.
The lament was played by members of the Nagaisgich Pipes and Drums. The Act of Remembrance poem was read followed by Reveille, played by Connor Wilde. The Prayer for Peace was given by John Reeves. Bill Chase introduced the guest speaker, MP Sean Fraser.
In Fraser’s remarks, he acknowledged the service of all veterans in each and every conflict in which they were involved. He said he hopes the acts of remembrance will carry on. We should be very proud of our military missions, past and present; Canada has always answered the call. Many young men and women never returned from war zones; many returned with both physical and mental issues.
Prayer of Remembrance was given by Bill Colbourne. Spectal music was provided by Jeannie Cameron and Dawn Gorman who sang, “Where have all the flowers gone?” Wreaths were then laid.
In his closing remarks, Robert Marshall thanked all those taking part in the service and those attending. The Rev. Alvin Klein pronounced the benediction. Refreshments were served at the fire hall for those participating in the service.
