Cancer Sucks Cup surpasses $100,000 total

- BY KEVIN ADSHADE

The Cancer Sucks Cup has hit a milestone.

This year, the Cancer Sucks CUP raised $11,750 in cash donations, bringing the nine-year total to $100,500.

“We also had a great big van-load of toys, as well,” said Drew Graham, who organizes the annual event with his wife Kaitlin, along with the help of others. He estimated that the value of the toys was somewhere between $4,000 and $5,000.

Surpassing the $100,000 doesn’t even include the nine van-loads of toys that the Grahams have delivered in the nine years since the Cancer Sucks CUP was started to remember Oliver Graham, who died in 2010 at age three, after a 20-month fight against cancer.

Everything that is accumulated goes toward the oncology unit at the IWK, as well as Ronald McDonald House.

Graham delivered the toys in the early morning hours of Dec. 24, with his 13-year-old son Jax accompanying him on the trip to Halifax.

The activities surrounding the Cancer Sucks Cup also included a free public skate on Dec. 21 at the Pictou County Wellness Centre, a game involving two teams from Michelin and, new this year, a series of games featuring three teams (The Pistol Packin’ Papas, The Old Steelers and the Northumberland SeaCats). Those games were all played at Trenton rink.

“It’s just amazing how much the county responds to this,” Graham added. “We just want to give a big thank you to everyone who supports this.”
