Bantam A Subway Selects win silver

The Fundy Highland Bantam A Subway Selects came oh-so-close to gold at the Subway Cup last weekend.

The female hockey tournament took place at the Pictou County Wellness Centre from Jan. 4 to 6 and the bantam A girls won all three of their games to make it to the championship game, where they ultimately lost in a shootout.

They started the tournament with two games on Friday, with the first one a 4-0 victory over Metro East Inferno Red. Olivia Marks had a hat trick and Mallory Sangster also scored. Assists went to Jessa MacKeil and Natasha Hahn. Kylee Alexander earned the shutout in net and took player of the game honours.

Their second game on Friday saw them handle the Yarmouth Western Riptide White 6-0. Scoring for Fundy was MacKeil and Marks, both with two goals, while singles went to Camryn Wright and Lucia Mason. Assists went to Marks andMason. Myah Ernst earned the shutout in net and Marks was player of the game.

On Saturday, the Selects defeated Colchester 5-1. Marks had a pair of goals, singles to Hahn, Taylor Toole and Emma MacLeod. Assists to Raleigh MacDonald, MacKeil and Marks. Alexander got the win in goal. Player of the game was Jana Cameron.

In the championship game on Sunday, they faced Yarmouth again.

In an exciting game, the Selects came from behind to tie the contest 3-3. Scoring for Fundy were Hahn, with two goals, and a single to MacKeil. Assists went to Maggie MacLean and MacKeil. The game went to overtime and then was decided by a shootout. The shootout went to sudden death with Marks and Jessa MacKeil getting goals. In the hard-fought battle, they came up short with the final score 4-3 for the Riptides. Taylor Toole received player of the game.
