Dream a little dream

- Doug Pilsworth Doug Pilsworth is a retired United Church minister and monthly contributor to Faith for Today.

They say that much is revealed through our dreams, that they tap into our subconscious and reveal the truth behind our actions. When I was young, I used to have occurrences called deja vu. I would go to sleep and dream about something that would reoccur in my awake times, maybe two or three days later. Why I had these dreams I do not know, but it was eerie to be going through life and then be part of something that you had seen before. It may have been the lighting of a room or the voice of someone that would trigger my memory of my dream. It was around this time that I began reading in the Bible about others who dreamed dreams. I read about Joseph who began interpreting the dreams of Pharaoh. This talent moved Joseph from slave to second in command in the Pharaoh’s court. My talent moved me from playing second saxophone in my high school band to first sax. Not the same, but it was something for me! The Bible, I learned, was packed with people who dreamed of future events. God spoke to them through their dreams. This time of year, we remember the three Magi leaving Bethlehem, by another route all because of a dream. God spoke to people through dreams. We remember Jacob fleeing from Saul and dreaming about the stairway to heaven. Dreams hold powerful messages for the dreamers. It seems rare nowadays that we hear of people having dreams from God. Has God been muted by our sophistication or maybe by our avarice and detachment from others? Are we not hearing God because we no longer seek out God? It seems that when God spoke or speaks to people through their dreams that it is because God’s message needs to be heard. Today, our world, as some people think,

“Today, our world, as some people think, is going to hell in a hand basket. We look around and we wonder, what is happening? Where is the love of neighbour or even of God? It seems like, it is everyone for themselves, in the survival of the mighty.”

is going to hell in a hand basket. We look around and we wonder, what is happening? Where is the love of neighbour or even of God? It seems like, it is everyone for themselves, in the survival of the mighty. Where is any sense of empathy for each other? Where is the helping hand? Oh, we see snippets of it, every so often, but only in the last couple of minutes of a news cast. In a couple of days, we will again be reflecting on the life of a man who had a dream. It was a message from God that took life in the man, Martin Luther King Jr. In fact, his most famous speech was called the “I Have a Dream” speech. Maybe, it’s time for us to recall his dream. YouTube it and listen to it, again and again. Listen to the words of his dream for all of God’s children, no matter their faith. Listen to his passion for equality and respect for all peoples. Watch him march through the valleys of hatred and discrimination and see the power of God, in him. It’s time again for this dream to become a reality in all of our lives. In our darkened world, this dream is a ray of hope for all. God still speaks to us, through our dreams, but we have to put ourselves in a place of peace and solitude for us to hear that small, still voice of our Creator. Dreams do come true. Open yourself up to hearing the Word from God in your heart and make it a reality in your life by reaching out to those who seek justice and peace. God’s love. Dream a little dream with me. God bless you all.
