50 Plus Club meets

The 50 Plus Club of New Glasgow met on Jan. 2 for its regular monthly meeting at the New Glasgow Fire Department.

President Kathleen opened the meeting with the senior’s prayer and song. There were no minutes to report. Treasurer June presented the monthly financial statement from Dec. 5, 2018, to Jan. 2, 2019.

June moved that the financial statement be approved as presented. Seconded by Donna Cameron.

There will be a special Fun Day, Friday, Jan. 25, at 1:30 p.m. at the 50 Plus Club at the New Glasgow Fire Department. Entertainment will include Uke Group, and the Decoste Brothers, with their Sing Song for all members. Lunch will be served. Members who will be preparing lunches are Carol, Elaine, Pookie, Josie, Terry, Betty and Isabel.

Elaine MacLellan will be taking over the position as membership person in February from Tom Campbell.

On Jan. 16, Salvation Army Westville will be serving lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The menu consists of chunky soup, homemade rolls, marble cake, ice cream, coffee and tea. This is free to the public and donations are accepted.

On the second Wednesday of every month, the Salvation Army will offer 50 per cent off everything except furniture.

Election in June — positions to fill: vice-president, secretary, treasurer. Dollie Tortola will take over the position of president.

Dollie Tortola presented Tom Campbell with a small token for the clubs in appreciation of his volunteer work for the last four years.

Speaker for the month of January 2019 was Deon Durtle, coordinator of the Salvation Army. Deon’s talk was about the various help the Salvation Army gives to the community, such as the food bank and thrift store. They ave also started a heating program, and serve lunches on the third Wednesday of the month in Westville.

We would like to thank Marge Alexander and Barb MacDonnell for working in the kitchen for January’s meeting. Isabel Low and Paula Peterson will be working in the kitchen for February’s meeting.
