‘We consider it a foot in the door’

Recruitment agency for Michelin contract positions gets good turnout at information session

A company which hires contractors for Michelin in Pictou County hosted an information session at the Career Connections building in New Glasgow on Tuesday.

The response to the event, which was posted on the Nova Scotia Works’ Facebook page, was really strong with between 40 and 50 people arriving to fill out preliminary interview questionnaires.

Usually these are filled out over the phone and by Randstad’s recruiters. But because of the large number of people who were there it was decided to have everyone check the boxes themselves.

“I’ve never worked in an industrial environment before, but I’m excited to try it out,” said 21-yearold Aiden Fortune.

“She said that we’d hear back in two or three days,” added Keegan MacKay, 20.

All Randstad employees receive the same training as their Michelin counterparts, but as contractors they receive less pay.

“We consider it a foot in the door,” said Randstad recruitment specialist, Jenna Villemagne. “When Michelin does its big hiring we really encourage our employees to apply. You can use us for references and we can help with the application.”

Both MacKay and Fortune applied for the three positions that Randstad is hoping to have filled by the end of the week. However, success with Randstad might not mean immediate employment. The company uses these hiring events to also create a pool of potential employees should positions need to be filled at any time.

“I’m hoping to get a full-time job, definitely. Steady employment would be really nice,” said Fortune.

In October, Michelin North America (Canada) Inc. announced it will be adding 150 new jobs to its Pictou County site in addition to the 200 temporary positions that will be made permanent by 2020.

Updates on any upcoming information sessions from Randstad will be posted on the Nova Scotia Works Employment Services Centre Facebook page.
