New Glasgow welcomes artist in residence Sarah Mosher

NEW GLASGOW — The Town of New Glasgow recently welcomed 2019 NSCAD artist in residence Sarah Mosher and local NSCAD alumni in residence Rachael Robitaille.

Mosher is a textile artist and photographer from Canaan, Kings County. She moved to Halifax to complete undergraduate work at the NSCAD University, which gave her new appreciation for the community she grew up in.

“I grew up learning how to do textiles, embroidery and sewing, and it’s just something I drew to during my time at NSCAD, especially weaving. It’s complex, but it’s beautiful.”

Mosher graduated with a bachelor of fine art in interdisciplinary arts in 2016, and since then has continued to do her studio work, focusing on community in rural Nova Scotia. She is currently exploring accessibility to art in rural settings as well as accessibility to the visually impaired.

“I’m really interested in bringing art to rural areas in Nova Scotia — I came from a rural area,” she said.

In 2011, in partnership with NSCAD University, the Town of New Glasgow launched the New Glasgow Community Studio Residency Program. The program offers selected NSCAD graduates the opportunity to develop their professional practice and jumpstart their careers while living and working in the community.

While in residence, the artists’ work with elementary and middle school students on art projects, as well as offer workshops and lectures to New Glasgow area residents. This year, the town is pleased to add NSCAD alumni to the program.

“The town has really embraced NSCAD and the Community Studio Residency program,” said Mayor Nancy Dicks. “Each year the artists bring new and inspiring talent and are an asset to our community. We are very proud to have established such a partnership with NSCAD as part of our ongoing commitment to support the local creative economy.”

A welcoming reception for the NSCAD artists in residence was held Feb. 1 at the NSCAD community art studio, located behind the New Glasgow library. By then, Mosher had already made a scarf, working on the loom, which is on loan during her tenure at the studio.

“That’s our first project on the loom since we built it here.”
