Put a dietitian on your team today

Explore the potential that foods holds for you

- Teresa Flynn

You may not realize it but many of us have a personal team of health care professionals that help us live a healthy lifestyle and feel our best. Your team may include a doctor, dentist, pharmacist or physiotherapist but do you have a dietitian on your team? Have you ever thought to yourself? I try to eat healthy but there must be more I can do to feel better. I find it difficult to lose weight and keep it off. I’m unsure how to read food labels in order to make healthy food choices. I need help managing my diabetes or taking steps to reduce my risk of developing diabetes. I’m taking blood pressure or cholesterol medications and should adjust my food to help manage these issues. I need help planning meals and getting ideas for feeding myself or my family. I’m trying to manage a food allergy or intolerance. I want to eat better so I can live a healthy, long life. If you answered yes to any of the above, it might be time to consider adding a registered dietitian (RD) to your personal health care team! Dietitians are qualified professionals trained to guide you on diet, food and nutrition. Registered dietitians complete a four-year bachelors degree in dietetics, have completed an accredited internship, have passed the national dietetics exam and must submit evidence of their competency every year. In Nova Scotia, both dietitians and nutritionists have the same qualifications. Only those registered with the Nova Scotia Dietetic Association are legally able to use “dietitian” or “Nutritionist” in reference to the services they provide. National Nutrition Month is focusing on Unlocking the Potential of Food. Food is nourishment, but it’s so much more. Dietitians can help you unlock the potential of food to improve health, fuel activities and bring people together. Food brings people together at meal time. Food can help prevent disease and keep us energized. In many ways, every day, food nourishes and inspires us. This Nutrition Month, explore the potential that foods holds for you. Potential to fuel: Plan nutritious snacks and meals into your day to stay energized. Go on a label reading tour to learn how to read food labels to choose the best snacks for your household. Potential to prevent: Understand how your food choices can help prevent diseases like diabetes. Come to a free class to learn what foods to eat to keep you at your healthiest. Our taste-and-learn classes help you prepare these foods and try samples. Potential to bring us together: Eating together is one of life’s greatest pleasures. Share your table with family and friends. Let Sobeys dietitians help you realize the potential of food, both at home and at work.
