Local kids raising money for trip to nationals
WESTVILLE — When Donald Calder says he needs to raise $2,500 to send two kids off on an adventure, someone tells him “it’s Pictou County — you won’t have any problem getting what you need.” Calder, who helps run the youth darts league at the Royal Canadian Legion branch in Westville (Mondays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. for ages eight to 18), is helping to organize some fundraising efforts so they can send two Pictou County darts players — Dillon MacLelllan and Abbey Harty — to Saskatchewan. Both of them finished third at the Nova Scotia tournament. “We had three of our players advance to Nova Scotia play downs in Bedford in late February,” Calder said. “We’re trying to raise enough money to send these two players to the Canadian championships.” The Canadian championships will take place in mid-May in Saskatoon, Sask. Some of the fundraising methods they will undertake are bottle drives, a barbecue and dart tournaments, among other initiatives. The money will cover expenses for air fare, lodging and meals. “Everything that we could collect is going to be divided between the two kids,” Calder said. “We need to raise $2,500 to send those two kids to Saskatoon. We’re trying to get the word out there as much as we can, about what these kids have done.” Anyone who wants to help out can reach Calder at 902-485-8771.
