Shot at redemption

Wear Well Bombers host major bantam provincials

- ADAM MACINNIS

PICTOU COUNTY, N.S. — Playoffs may not have gone the way the Wear Well Bombers hoped for with two 5-4 losses that took them out of the action, but they’ve still got a shot at redemption. Beginning today, March 14, the team will be hosting the bantam AAA provincial championships, giving them a second chance to prove they are among the best in the province. “We’re still getting better,” said head coach Jon Sim. “I think we have more to give for this weekend.” Already the team has finished better than any team from Pictou County has since the league was restructured to major bantam. They ended the regular season in fifth place in the standings of 12 teams and have two players — Lucas Canning and Landon Sim — in the top standings for points. Coach Sim said it’s been great to be able to watch how much the team has improved from the start and he believes they have a real chance at winning this weekend. “Our team has worked our buts off all year. We’ve gotten a ton better.” While they have a very strong offence, he’s encouraging the players to keep their focus on defence. “If we can take care of our end the offence will take care of itself.” Sim said he’s very thankful for the parent group that has been working behind the scenes to help organize this event. His only hope now is that people in Pictou County will come out to support the team. With many other teams already finished, he said it’s a chance to watch some great hockey in Pictou County. The games will be played at the Pictou County Wellness Centre beginning at noon March 14 with opening ceremonies at 6 p.m. that day. “It’d be nice for everyone to come out and support the Wear Well Bombers,” Sim said.
