Taking a look around Pictou County

- OLIVIA MALLEY THE NEWS olivia.malley@saltwire.com @OliviaMalley

The Pictou County Regional Enterprise Network is working to give people a new view of Pictou County.

In partnerships with Nova Scotia Business Inc., PCREN is creating a 360-degree video highlighting different parts of Pictou County.

“Our hope is with this 360 video it gives people an opportunity to see the community even if they can’t physically see the whole community and really have that immersive experience,” says Sarah Wiseman.

Currently, they are in phase one of the project. Phase one is focused on businesses and the cost will mostly be covered by Nova Scotia Business Inc. For phase two PCREN wants to expand it a bit and cover the whole community, including things like the farmers market, the Pictou Waterfront and Hector Heritage Quay.

Wiseman says they want to connect with stakeholders and see what they want featured, making sure they have a little bit from all of the different corners of the community.

“I think we’ve all learned through COVID that not everything has to be urban-centric and we’ve got an awful lot to offer in communities like ours,” says Wiseman.

The video would come with a QR code for people to scan with their phones, automatically pulling up the video.

When watching the video in a virtual reality viewer, people will be able to move their heads around for a 360-degree view, giving them the impression they are standing in the middle of what they are seeing. PCREN is hoping to be able to provide Google Cardboard viewers,

The videos can be watched without a viewer as well. People will be able to use their finger or mouse to move around the screen.

They are hoping this video can be used by businesses as a recruitment tool or that it will help attract businesses to the county. An added benefit would be for local community members to further see the value of where they live.

“We have a lot of these hidden gems in our backyards that we sometimes don’t realize,” says Wiseman.

The launch of the video will depend on the shooting schedule, but Wiseman says they are hoping to launch it before the end of the summer or early fall at the latest.
