The Read by the Sea Literary Festival is returning to its roots this summer with its regular in-person outing on the Northumberland Shore.

“There is such a wonderful atmosphere to the festival when book lovers and story lovers and authors are able to come together in the same space,” says Lana MacEachern, a member of the Read by the Sea organizing committee. “There is an excitement, especially with the children’s events. It is just the chance for people to interact in-person with the authors; it just makes the event that much more special.”

The festival is scheduled to take place June 30 - July 2, 2022. Authors expected to speak include Lisa Harrington, author of The Big Dig; Jon Tattrie, author of Peace by Chocolate and Lawrence Hill, author of the Book of Negroes.

Onwards, an event that is new to the festival, is intended for middle-graders and teens. The event will allow them to hear from authors, as well as ask them questions and get tips for writing as a young person.

The inclusion of this event is the Read by the Sea Organizing Committee’s way of trying to have an event for everyone, from age 1-100.

Some of the other events include a Heritage Story Walk, Family Campfire Storytelling, Writing Workshops and a Pitch the Publisher Dragons’ Den-like event.

Applications for the Pitch the Publisher event can be submitted the following ways before April 1.

• Email using the “contact us” feature at www.readbythesea.ca

• Mail to Read by the Sea, c/o River John Library, PO Box 104, River John, NS B0K 1N0.

The proposal should include the book summarised in two sentences or less as well as its target demographic and genre. Plus, why the said author is the most qualified person to write it and why people will want to read it.

A jury will select the 9-10 entries and the writers will then pitch their manuscripts to the publisher panel on July 2, 9 a.m.-10:30 a.m. at the River John Legion.
