May you … spring into the library

April showers bring May flowers, and with thoughts turning to the outdoors we have several new gardening books on our shelves sure to delight the green thumbs amongst us, and to inspire the budding new gardeners too. From big projects with big ideas to small pots with big impact, we have a book for everyone.

There is Stephanie Rose’s new book “The Regenerati­ve Garden: 80 Practical Projects for Creating a Self-sustaining Garden Ecosystem: Easy, Small-scale Permacultu­re Ideas for the Home Garden”, John Forti’s “The Heirloom Gardener: Traditiona­l Plants & Skills for the Modern World”, and “The Flower Yard: Growing Flamboyant Flowers in Containers” by Arthur Parkinson.

Looking for more gardening tips? New this year, the River John library is hosting a Seed Library, and a Seedy Saturday community seed exchange on Saturday, May 7 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

And the Pictou library is hosting a “Paper Flower Bouquet” making craft on Wednesday, May 18 at 6 p.m. (registrati­on is required, as seating is limited). Also coming up in early May, we celebrate Children’s Book Week, and we’re very fortunate to host a whole week of fantastic author readings and illustrato­r presentati­ons (online) at the library from May 2 to 6, with Isabelle Groc, Michael Hutchinson, Kallie George, Ekiuwa Aire, Nhung Tran-Davies, Stephanie Cooke and Ruth Ohi! Our Take and Make home crafting kits continue to be super popular, this month we’ll be making Beaded Bookmarks. Drop on by your local library, and pick up a kit, while supplies last.

And more fun for all ages, we have drop-in Scavenger Hunts all month long at our New Glasgow, Stellarton and Westville libraries too. The Pictou Library is hosting a Free Comic Book Day on Saturday, May 7, and a “Paper Bag Princess” puppet show on Tuesday, May 24 at 2 p.m. All welcome!

We also have a few art making workshops coming up in May. Kiva-Marie Belt will be leading two workshops at the River John Library. A Zine making Workshop on Saturday, May 14 from 10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m., and Mandala Drawing Workshop on Saturday, May 28 from 10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. Seating is limited, and registrati­on is required by contacting the River John Library, (902) 351-2599. Cyndee Sparrow will be leading a Printmakin­g Workshop at the New Glasgow Library on Saturday, May 14 from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. Seating is limited, and registrati­on is required by contacting the New Glasgow Library, (902) 752-8233.

And a reminder, all locations of the Pictou-Antigonish Regional Library will be closed on Monday, May 23, 2022 for the Victoria Day holiday.
