WELLAND — Graphic design major Alex Campbell draws a lot of attention when he plays basketball for Niagara College.

He’s among the top scorers in the Ontario Colleges Athletics Association, averaging a team-high 17.7 point s wi t h t hree games remaining in t he regular season, leads t he Knight s with an average of 3.1 assists per game and his 4.9 rebounds per game is second only to t eammate Rashad Morley, who is averaging 11.3 boards per game.

Not too bad for a freshman who is a rookie in all but basking in the sports spotlight at the community college in Welland. An 18- point t urn against Mohawk and 11 rebounds, for his first double- double of the season, and 12 points in only 22 minutes of playing time against St. Clair resulted in Campbell receiving male athlete of the week honours for the fourth time this season.

The 6-foot-2 guard played high school basketball at Brampton Centennial, the same alma mater as fellow Knights rookie Ashton Stephenson who led Niagara in scoring with 16 points in an 85-61 victory over St. Clair.

Third- year starter Marieka Ouimette is the college’s top female athlete for the week endingsunday. The one- time Knights rookie of the year had 11 kills, an ace and four blocks for 16 points in the women’s volleyball team’s four-set victory over St. Clair.

It was t he second strong performance of the week for the 6-foot-4 middle from Spencerville, Ont., near Ottawa. Ouimette played one of her best games of the season in a 3-2 victory over Sheridan with six kills, four aces and nine blocks for 19 points. She also had four digs.

Ouimette is enrolled in the Pre- Health Science Program at Niagara’s main campus in Welland. Last year she graduated from the school’s Fitness and Health Program.

This is Ouimette’s second athlete of the week honour this season.
