London on the menu

Summer Olympics means all appetites on Britain

- rita.demontis@sunmedia.ca

Britain certainly has been on the world’s front burner for a while — last year’s Royal Wedding, the recent Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and now the upcoming summer Olympics.

Among the glitz and glory of the athletic pomp and ceremony, we want to know what’s on the menu for the upcoming games.

According to a recent report from The London Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG), the food and drink that will be served to the millions of spectators and thousands of athletes is going to set standards for future games.

“We want everyone who attends the Games to have a fantastic experience and, central to this, is the food and drink that’s available,” said LOCOG chief executive, Paul Deighton. “We have gone to great lengths to find top quality, tasty food that celebrates the best of Britain.” The food will fit into two main themes: British food that will reflect the multicultural mix of flavours and foods enjoyed across the UK, with everything from Italian to Indian, sea- food to salads, and such classic favourites as fish and chips and pie and mash. The heritage and diversity of British regional products and recipes will be celebrated. We’re talking lamb from Wales, charcuterie from Perthshire and sourdough bread from Tower Hamlets, made in a traditional brick oven lined with peat from the Thames, said Deighton.

With 195 nations represented in the six host boroughs, London is amped up as a global city and there will be international food from every continent — from authentic Asian dishes to African Brai barbecues, Caribbean flavours to tasty Mediterranean fare and a range of street foods from around the world.

We’re looking forward to poutine and maple syrup in honour of Canada!
