Take the virtual hockey challenge

- AMY ROEBUCK Amy Roebuck is the community services co- ordinator at the Fort Erie Public Library.

At

the Fort Erie Public Library, we know that it is not just adults who are excited about making gifts and crafts for the holidays.

Do you know about Rainbow Loom? If you have friends or family between the ages of, say, seven and 17, I’m sure you do. It is a clever, creative crafting system that uses tiny bands to make original items to decorate jewelry and even Christmas trees. Children at all three library branches will have an opportunity this week to make a holiday charm or bracelet on the Rainbow Loom.

Thursday at the Stevensville branch, Monday at the Centennial branch and Tuesday at Crystal Ridge, with each session beginning at 3: 30 p. m., bands, patterns and a limited number of looms will be supplied. Bring your own loom if you have one, bring along a friend, and have a great time making your own holiday creation.

Please register ahead, as space is limited for these $ 2 programs. Another terrific chance for young people to get creative is at the Thursday evening Knitting Maker Space for ages eight to 14, held at 6: 30 p. m. at the Crystal Ridge branch. These sessions for learning or practising knitting are free, with all materials supplied by ladies of the Bowen Road Women’s Institute. Adults and older teens have their opportunity for knitting help and guidance on Tuesday evenings at 6: 30 p. m. at the Centennial branch.

Video game tournaments are a popular, free monthly event at the Centennial branch, where the XBox 360 and PS3 are busy most days after school. On Dec. 13, kids ages 10 and up will play an NHL 15 marathon session to determine the ultimate virtual hockey player. Stop by soon to select your team, and be ready to start on Saturday at 10: 15 a. m. for bracketing. May the best player win.

The holidays are especially magical for the youngest of all, and on Wednesday, little ones ages two and up may enjoy special stories and a craft to celebrate. Registration is required for this holiday story and craft program, and $ 2 per child or $ 5 per family will be asked for materials.

Interesting films for adults and teens are offered this week. Most of us have heard of Burt’s Bees products, but who is Burt? Burt’s Buzz is an intimate look at the world of Burt Shavitz, the face and cofounder of Burt’s Bees. Wise, wry, ornery and opinionated, Shavitz is committed to living off the land and keeping true to his humble beginnings despite celebrity status. This documentary exposes the collision between business and personal values in one man’s life. Burt’s Buzz will play this evening at 6: 30 p. m. at the Centennial branch, and encore on Tuesday afternoon at 2: 00 p. m. at the Crystal Ridge branch.

The Maze Runner, playing on Saturday at 2: 30 p. m. at the Crystal Ridge branch, is the story of Thomas, a teen who wakes up in an enclosed environment, remembering nothing but his own name. He and 60 other boys are trying to find a way to escape through the maze that surrounds their living space. There are some great, fast-paced action scenes, particularly those involving the nightmarish Grievers.

End your tech nightmares when staff members offer training and troubleshooting help with your own e- reader, mobile device or laptop in a free, drop- in session on Tuesday at 2 p. m. at the Centennial branch.

All branches of the library will be open on Christmas Eve from 10 a. m. to 12: 30 p. m., and closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. The website is open 24/ 7 for browsing, placing holds and downloading books, music and magazines at www. fepl. ca.
