St. Catharines hands out Arts Awards
The City of St. Catharines 2015 St. Catharines Arts Awards evening took place Saturday May 30th at the Sean O’Sullivan Theatre, Centre for the Arts, Brock University. The arts community came out in force to celebrate 36 nominees in six categories.
Emcees Stephanie Jones and Stephen Remus welcomed more than 300 people to the show which included 6 award presentations and 4 performances. Award recipients were announced that night and included: Dena Colling Gelentso, Arts in Education; Mike Enns, Emerging Artist, Duncan MacDonald, Established Artist; Debbie Slade, Making a Difference; Chris and Catharine Lowes of Mahtay Café, Patron of the Arts; and Janis Barlow, Volunteer in the Arts. Award recipients received a civic certificate and a cheque for $400.
Local performing arts were featured with performances by Momentum Choir, Lindsay Jack and KT Job, and the Dancing for Somebody Troupe from Ballet Etc. A film trailer of Mike Enns documentar y “Restrung” was also screened, and music accompaniment was courtesy of local music promoters Indoor Shoes.
The City unveiled three prototypes for a future award design, which will be on display at the Kiwanis AquaticS Centre for the summer. Designs are by artists Clayton Haigh, Teresa Seaton and Steven Tippin: the final selection will be made in the fall of 2015.
