Organizers expect about 20,000 people to check out the 11th annual Niagara Falls Ribfest this weekend.

The ribfest barbecue, hosted by Rotary Club of Niagara Falls Sunrise, is scheduled to take place from Friday to Sunday in the Niagara Square parking lot, in front of the former Future Shop building.

It will be the second year at the Montrose Rd. mall. Ribfest used to be held at Optimist Park, which is now largely used for retail shops.

“It’s an overall great community, family friendly event,” said cochairwoman Nancy Tkachuk.

“Obviously, people love the ribs. They also like to get out and socialize, listen to good music and enjoy community in a safe environment.”

She said six “top-notch” ribbers will serve up their fare.

Visitors will be able to cast their ballot for the People’s Choice Award, which last year went to Billy Bones, who will be returning this weekend. The Best Ribs and Best Sauce awards will be judged on Sunday. Horn Dawgs took home both awards last year, and will also be back this weekend.

There will be daily 50-50 draws, a kids area with workshops Saturday and Sunday, and an early bird five-car draw Sunday at 5 p.m.

Tkachuk said visitors will also enjoy other food alternatives, such as the blooming onions, roasted corn, kettle corn, shawarma and fresh-squeezed lemonade.

Parking, admission and entertainment are free, but donations will be accepted. Visitors purchase the food of their choice.

Money raised during the event goes back into the community and has supported nonprofit organizations, such as Pathstone Mental Health, the Greater Niagara General Hospital Foundation and the Boys and Girls Club of Niagara.

Tkachuk said Ribfest feels a bit different now that it’s at Niagara Square, but visitors enjoy it nonetheless.

“Optimist Park had more of an outdoor park picnic atmosphere, where as at Niagara Square we’re set up on pavement,” she said, adding one benefit at the Square is if it rains, guests won’t have to worry about soaking in the grass or mud.

“A new location always presents challenges, but last year went very well. From the feedback we received from our patrons and guests, they enjoyed it just as much.”
