FORT ERIE PUBLIC LIBRARY

There is a topic in the news these days that sparks strong feelings, even controversy, but it is a subject of great importance to many families. That topic is the recently passed legislation on Medical Assistance in Dying. To fulfil its mandate for lifelong learning, the Fort Erie Public Library will present a forum with that legislation as its focus. It will be held on Wednesday evening, April 26, beginning at 7 p.m. Attendance is open to the public and there is no admission fee, but we recommend you call to reserve or pick up tickets in advance to ensure seating.

Invited speakers will make informational presentations on this legislation. A lawyer will explain the wording of the law, a representative from the NHS will describe the steps involved in the process, a gentleman whose late wife was one of the first persons to end her life under the legislation in the Niagara Health System will give his firsthand account, and a representative of the Niagara Chapter of Dying with Dignity, will present a statement.

Other groups have also been invited. Members of the public will be able to submit questions in writing, which the speakers will answer later in the program. The purpose of this forum is simply to share information. There are some books and movies in the library collection that touch on this very sensitive topic. One is the film Wit, directed by Mike Nichols and starring Emma Thompson as a renowned professor who is forced to reassess her life and make plans for her death when she is diagnosed with terminal cancer. Related books include Last Breath: cautionary tales from the limits of human endurance by Peter Stark, and Atul Gawande’s Being Mortal. Gawande’s book is subtitled “Medicine and what matters in the end”, while the DVD version (a PBS Frontline presentation) suggests we “re-examine death and dying”.

They say: A shampoo that strengthens dull and lifeless hair, adds volume, vitality and shine. The conditioner strengthens and moisturizes hair, adds vitality and shine and detangles without weighing down hair. We say: Our tester gives the products two thumbs up.
