St. Catharines native Steve Stone is the new men’s volleyball head coach at Mohawk College in Hamilton.

Stone, 26, succeeds Matthew Schnarr, who continues as head coach of the women’s volleyball squad.

“I’m excited about the opportunity to coach at Mohawk College and join the Mountaineer family,” Stone said. “The men’s volleyball program has a long history of success, especially over the last decade with Matthew Schnarr at the helm, and I look forward to the challenge of following in his foot steps and continuing the tradition of excellence.

“Mohawk has a real family atmosphere and I could feel it the moment I walked in. This made my choice to accept the role very easy. Coaching in the OCAA is a dream come true to me and I am very thankful and blessed that Mohawk has given me this opportunity. I am excited to get the OCAA season underway and get right into it.”

Stone won three OFSAA Championships as a player at Eden High School in St. Catharines.

He began his post secondary career with Niagara College in 2009. He then moved to Redeemer University College in 2010-2011.

Stone returned home in 20132014 and became an assistant coach with the Brock University women’s volleyball team. He also coached the 18U Niagara Rapids boys team.

From 2014 to 2016 he rejoined Niagara as captain and setter. In his first year back he led the Knights to the OCAA Gold Medal and CCAA Bronze Medal. He was a Second Team West Division AllStar in 2014-2015 and a First Team selection in 2015-2016. He was the MVP at the 2014-2015 OCAA Championship.

A two-time Academic AllCanadian, Stone also won the Niagara College Leadership Award in 2014-2015.
