Latest album sets furious pace in first week of sales
Taylor Swift’s new album Reputation has sold more than a million copies in four days.
Swift’s comeback record, her first since 2014’s 1989, was released to a blaze of publicity that included the singer appearing on U.S. comedy show Saturday Night Live.
Billboard magazine editors, initial sales reports from Nielsen Music show Reputation had sold 1.05 million copies by the end of Monday, putting it ahead of Ed Sheeran’s ÷ (divide) as the year’s biggest-selling album.
Sheeran’s record was released in March and has sold 919,000 copies to date. It’s not all bad news for the British singer-songwriter, however, as he features on End Game, a track on Swift’s album.
Reputation’s incredible four-day sales mean that she is on course to improve upon the 1.29-million first week sales she achieved with 1989.
It is also the first album to sell a million copies in a week since Adele’s 25 racked up 1.19 million sales in 2015.
The record is also taking the U.K. chart by storm, as the midweek chart update from compilers at the Official Charts Company said Reputation has already sold more than 65,000 copies. The figure puts Swift well ahead of last week’s number one, Sam Smith’s The Thrill of It All, which has sold less than half as many copies.
