Niagara Falls has fully ‘floating’ library

- CARRIE BOSCO NIAGARA FALLS LIBRARY

If you’ve got an email address — then you’ve got the power! The power for your library to send you a message the exact moment your reserved item comes in to your favourite library. Additionally, your email can act as a reminder to let you know that you have items that are coming due which gives you time to call, drop in or go online and renew your items from home. How convenient for busy people and families on the go. So don’t be afraid to share your email address with your library, it’s safe with us and not shared and it can be a very helpful tool to keep you organized in this busy world.

So how does my library keep having interesting, relevant titles in the library when I come? Say hello to floating collections. Niagara Falls Public Library is a fully floating library. That is, when a customer takes some items home from their home location, and decides to drop them off at another, those items will then have a new home. The concept of floating collections has been around for some 20 years. Its history has been documented in some cases up to 80 years ago with its beginnings in western Canada and the United States. It provides a fresh, new set of items to be viewed by our customers in that library’s community as well as a fresh collection to choose from. It can often indicate the needs for reading in a certain community. For example, a community may have a large population whose first language is French and so many items may end up at the location where this community is located. Our Information, Resource and Connections library staff can then determine the needs of this collection and expand as needed.

Families take note of the upcoming holiday on Monday, Feb. 19. Both the Community Centre and Victoria Avenue Libraries will be open from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Kids and their families can enjoy drop-in, Olympic-themed games and fun from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at both locations.

The Niagara Falls Public Library (all locations) is a designated, daytime warming centre during these extremely cold winter days. The library seeks to be a resource for those who require some assistance in locating warm shelter and food during this time. From Feb. 5-28 the evening and overnight (9:30 p.m. to 9:30 a.m.) warming shelter in Niagara Falls is located at Glengate Alliance Church 6009 Valley Way, Niagara Falls. Food is available nightly and breakfast in the morning. Donated clothing items, groceries and toiletries may be on hand as they are available.

Join us in February and check out our great collections, view some local art, take a computer class and ask about our new databases. We power discovery!
