KO for Kids fights for kids’ mental health support
They’re no pros, but they’ll be donning the gloves to rumble for children’s mental health and cancer research.
The second annual KO for Kids charity event on June 15 will pit 26 competitors against each other in a ring set up at Scotiabank Convention Centre. Sanctioned by Boxing Ontario, the night will feature matches in various weight categories and skill levels, preceded by a rigorous training schedule with former Olympian Mike Strange (co-chairman) and former Canadian lightweight champion Billy Irwin.
Though it’s all for a good cause, Strange says the boxing ring brings out the competitive spirit in everyone.
“I’m not sure how serious each potential boxer takes it at the start, but once they are subjected to a strict training schedule and get into sparring, they get serious in a hurry,” he says.
“Many of those participating are doing it because they have an emotional connection to one of the causes.”
The event supports Pathstone Mental Health, Ronald McDonald House and stem cell research at McMaster Children’s Hospital. Last year’s competition raised just under $64,000.
“We wanted to ensure Niagara families are never left without options,” says Pathstone Foundation spokeswoman and KO for Kids co-chairwoman Kim Rossi. “The causes we are supporting this year are focused on helping children who are struggling with some form of illness, be it mental health, cancer or another critical issue.
“Money raised this year will shorten wait lists, further research and offer comfort to Niagara’s children youth and families.”
