Fort Erie SPCA opens new parkette for shelter dogs

- KRIS DUBE

The Fort Erie SPCA is doing everything it can to make life as comfortable as possible for dogs as they wait for new homes.

Officially opened last week at the Jarvis Street facility is a small parkette at the rear of the property for canines at the SPCA shelter to enjoy. It includes a large aerated roaming area and swimmable pond.

Made possible through donations, in-kind services and money brought in by fundraising efforts undertaken by staff and volunteers, SPCA manager Wendy Trombley says she is very grateful to everyone involved in making the new feature possible.

“It’s really great, we are so thankful,” said Trombley.

The next major event for the SPCA is its annual walkathon along the Friendship Trail near Waverly Beach, scheduled to take place Sept. 30.

Another program providing much-needed funds for the shelter is its cage sponsor initiative, where families and businesses can annually contribute $500 for dogs and $250 for cats, with the money going toward medical expenses such as vet bills and general care.

“We’ve had a lot of support from the public and it has really helped us immensely,” said Trombley.

Last month, the Fort Erie SPCA took in seven rescue dogs from North Carolina and this week was expecting another group to arrive.

Trombley said most of the dogs from the first group have already been adopted out.

She said it’s “very rewarding” knowing the shelter is playing a role in giving the dogs from the southern U.S. a new lease on life.

“A lot of those dogs are on their last chance down there,” she said.

Currently, there are 19 dogs and 20 cats at the shelter.
