Get ready to bring your best Lego game

- LAURA TRABUCCO Laura Trabucco is the community engagement librarian at Fort Erie Public Library.

It’s going to be an action-packed summer at Fort Erie Public Library.

Saturday is the kickoff party for our Summer Reading Club, which means it’s your first chance to sign up for the club. We will have games, prizes and our new big blue blocks. Everyone who signs up at the party will get a jump start on reading, and will be entered into win amazing prizes. Once you’re signed up you’ll be eligible for a prize each time you visit the library this summer. If you can’t make it on Saturday, don’t worry. You are welcome to sign up any time after June 16.

For both adults and kids, we have an exciting new opportunity: Reading Buddies. If you have a child that is not reading at their level, you can sign them up to work with a volunteer at the library once a week for 10 weeks. A volunteer will focus on reading one-on-one for one hour. Readers can be ages six and up (or in Grade 1). If you think this might benefit your child, please visit the library and ask for an application form.

If you enjoy helping little ones to read, you can become a reading buddy and come to the library once a week to help children read. You will also earn community service hours. Volunteers can be ages 14 and up. If interested, please visit us and fill out an application form.

The library has lots of great programs for kids this summer. Mad Science will be at the Centennial branch with a different theme each week — including dinosaurs, electricity, optical illusions and bubbling potions.

We have several ongoing series this summer, including Robot Club, Tween Club, KidZone and Dungeons & Dragons. You can look forward to Button Making, Trivia Parties (topics include Superheroes, Pokémon, Harry Potter, Stranger Things), Choose Your Own Adventure Zone, and Big Blue Building Parties. We’re also looking forward to hosting a Lego building tournament, an Escape Room, and a Candy Bingo Party this summer.

Summer program registration will open on Saturday, June 16. Please visit our website or call the library for more details on any events.

A correction from last week: The novel “Two Men, One River” was written by local author R. L. Manson. You can find more details, as well as where to buy a hard copy, at www.twomenoneriver.com. Our sincere apologies to the author for misspelling his name.
