Grimsby man charged after police discover drugs, guns and a steel palm tree

No, steel palm is not the name of some new designer drug, it’s literally one of the items Hamilton police recovered from a Grimsby home after executing a search warrant earlier this week.

On Wednesday a Grimsby man was arrested. All told, police say they recovered more than $20,000 in drugs and $25,000 in stolen property.

Included in that stolen property is a steel palm tree that was allegedly taken from a Hamilton home near the corner of Broker Drive and Mountain Brow Boulevard. About 10-feet tall and weighing in at roughly 170 pounds, it was created by Shawn Porter of Steel City Palms.

“Finding it completely made my day, and the lady it belongs to is thrilled,” Porter told the Hamilton Spectator.

“I'm not a big Facebook, social media guy but I got a Facebook message from someone who saw the Spectator article on Facebook,” Shawn explains. “She said she lives on the street (in Grimsby) and noticed police officers hanging around a neighbour's house.”

He hadn’t been home for two days, she said, but when he showed up police swarmed in and arrested him and then started unloading things from his house.

Police say the accused had methamphetamine, cocaine, and drug paraphernalia in his possession. A further search of the home found crystal meth, cocaine and magic mushrooms, as well as 10 firearms and more than 100 stolen items, including the steel palm tree.

Gabe Sciarra, 37, faces various gun and drug charges, along with a charge for possession of stolen property over $5,000.
