Drivers should see end to Hwy. 406 work in 2020

- ALLAN BENNER

After more than a year of traffic delays on Highway 406, motorists can look forward to more of the same for the next few years.

Ministry of Transportation spokesperson Valentina Stankovic said improvements underway on the highway in south St. Catharines as part of a $7.25million contract with Rankin Construction won’t be complete until summer 2020.

“We understand traffic delays caused by construction can be frustrating and appreciate drivers’ patience,” Stankovic said in an email. “This is work we need to do to improve the highway; however, we have not been made aware of any excessive queuing on Highway 406.”

The project led to the overnight closure of the northbound lanes of the highway between Glendale Avenue and Chestnut Street this week to replace and widen a highway overpass, accommodating the extension of the ramp and speed change lane from Glendale Avenue to Highway 406 north.

The closure was initially planned to occur on Tuesday but was delayed for a day due to a forecast for thunderstorms in the area.

Meanwhile, the St. David’s Road ramp has been closed for months, too, and isn’t expected to reopen until November.

But Stankovic said there are no other long-term ramp closures expected this year.

“It’s always helpful if motorists use alternate routes to avoid construction zones,” she said.
