St. Thomas golfer leads seniors championsh­ip

Lookout Point hosting Golf Canada final, which wraps up today

Mary Ann Hayward was the leader after Round 2 of the threeday Canadian Women’s MidAmateur and Senior Championsh­ip at Lookout Point Country Club course in Fonthill.

Hayward of St. Thomas shot a round of 72 Wednesday to finish with a two-day total of 149. Sue Wooster of Australia shot a 74 and was two strokes behind with a total of 151 as was Tuesday’s Round 1 leader Gail Pimm of Uxbridge. Pimm shot a 78 Wednesday after shooting 73 in the opening round.

Terrill Samuel of Etobicoke and Amy Ellertson of Free Union, Va., are tied for fourth with 152 stroke totals. Samuel shot a 73 Wednesday. Ellertson a 74.

Judith Kyrinis of Thornhill was in fifth with a total of 153.

The projected cut for the final round was 179.

The 2018 Canadian Women’s Senior Champion will receive an exemption to the 2018 USGA Senior Women’s Amateur Championsh­ip.

More than 150 golfers are entered in the event from as far in the U.S. as Florida and Texas as well as Australia’s Wooster.

Some of the local golfers taking part include Sharon Montgomery-Greenwood of Niagara-onthe-Lake and Karen Vamplew of Smithville. Shelley Bauer, Carol Cort, Chris Critelli and Cindy Wegg are all from St. Catharines. Stefi Markovich, Emily Zwier, Stefi Markovich and Nancy Bridgeman represent Welland.

Critelli was the top local player after Round 2 of the senior event. She was tied for 29th with a tworound total of 168 on rounds of 86 and 82.

Wegg was tied for 62nd with a two-round total of 177. She was the only local player in line to make the seniors cut.
