From Trauma to Beauty continues Indigenous concert series at library

- PAUL FORSYTH Metroland

Niagara Falls Public Library is presenting the third instalment in its Indigenous Concert Series with an after-hours event on Friday.

The event, running 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Victoria Avenue branch, is called From Trauma to Beauty.

Jennifer Dockstader and Jill ShimizuLunn will speak on the legacy of trauma and recovery, accompanied by Ryan Lunn’s original music and visual art.

“These women’s courageous journey through the pain of trauma to healing places is shared,” the library said in a news release. “The life-telling stories, live music, artistry and traditional teachings work together to bring voice to the healing of heart, detachment, abandonment and hope for reconciliation.”

Library chief executive officer Alicia Subnaik Kilgour said the concert series, in partnership with Niagara Concerts and Kakekalanicks, has been a great success.

“We are looking forward to the unique visual and musical experience that From Trauma to Beauty will take us on,” she said. “The passing on of ancestral knowledge is traditionally done through stories, music and art, and this experience will provide traditional opportunities to learn, share and grow.”

The event is free and open to people of all ages, but space is limited.

Space will be available for those wanting to experience the concert but who require a quieter, sensory friendly experience, said library community development and programming manager Laura Martin.
