’Hawks top Welland in battle for fifth place

Owen Allan leads Thorold with six-point game

Owen Allan had a six-point night with a goal and five assists to help the Thorold Blackhawks skate past the visiting Welland Jr. Canadians in Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League action Thursday night.

Brendan Charlton, two goals, two assists; and Dylan Latty, one goals, three assists; contribute­d four points each on offence as the

fifth-place Blackhawks improved their record in the Golden Horseshoe Conference to 6-9-0-1.

Also finding the back of the net for Thorold were Nick Gidney, Darcy Redwood and Nicholas Rubino.

Shots on goal were 48-30 in favour of the Blackhawks who took the lead in the season series against the Jr. Canadians two wins to one.

Matt Baumann and Cody Wall replied for sixth-place Welland which trailed 5-0 late in the second period and fell to 5-12-0-0 in league play.

Thorold finished the game 2-for-4 on the power play, Welland, 1-for-5.

Anthony Tremonte earned the win between the pipes for the Blackhawks.

Jr. Canadians starting goaltender Joey Fratantoni­o was tagged with the loss after allowing three goals on 17 shots on net.

Alex Vendette made 27 stops on 31 shots over the final two periods.

Thorold was back on the ice last night visiting the conference­leading Niagara Falls Canucks, 14-2-0-1 at Gale Centre.

Welland hosts the Canucks in a 7:05 p.m. puck drop Sunday.

Other weekend action in the Golden Horseshoe has the St. Catharines Falcons, 11-3-0-1, at the Fort Erie Meteors, 4-11-0-1, Saturday, 7:15 p.m.; and Fort Erie at the Pelham Panthers, 11-7-0-1, for a 2:30 p.m. matinee Sunday.
