Human remains investigation continues in Welland
Post-mortem won’t take place until ‘at least Thursday’
The identity of human remains found in rural east Welland on the weekend may not be known until later this week.
On Tuesday Niagara Regional Police Const. Phil Gavin said a post-mortem examination won’t take place until “at least Thursday.”
Whether the deceased found in the Cooks Mills area of Schisler and Moyer roads is male or female has not been determined, Gavin said, as the remains are “not in a condition that will allow for speculation on identity, including gender.”
The discovery was made by a member of the public on Sunday and police began their response to the area at about 4:45 p.m.
A search of the area has been taking place since then with police blocking Schisler Road between Darby and Moyer roads.
Gavin said the length of the police presence, two days as of late Tuesday afternoon, is “pretty consistent” to a case such as this one.
“With the weather and snow, it is important to be thorough before we leave, open up the scene,” he said.
He said more information will be known following the autopsy, when asked if the case is being treated as a homicide.
“Detectives are awaiting the results of the post-mortem and working with the coroner to establish the cause of death,” said Gavin.
He did not have information on how long police believe the remains had been in the area.
