NOTL considers lowering speed limits

Concerns from residents and the police about speeding on various roads in Niagara-on-the-Lake, particularly on gravel surfaces, has led to a request from a town councillor for lower speed limits.

Coun. Norm Arsenault suggested Monday that some roads with a speed limit of 80 km/h be reduced to 60 km/h. He would also like to see all gravel portions of concessions and lines with current speed limits greater than 60 km/h be lowered to that level.

Arsenault’s motion called for the speed limit of 60 km/h on Airport Road between Queenston Road and York Road, where there is new residential development, to be reduced by 10 km/h. Council referred his motion to the newly-formed transportation committee for discussion and recommendations.

Coun. Allan Bisback agreed with Arsenault that 80 km/h on gravel roads is too fast, but wanted to wait for further information from the transportation committee before looking at other speed limit changes.

“We wouldn’t just make those changes unless we have data to back it up,” he said.

The transportation committee will report back to council following its study of the roads included in the motion.
