Gallery Players bring in the Gryphon Trio

-

Toronto’s acclaimed Gryphon Trio will spend part of its 25th anniversary with the Gallery Players of Niagara.

The group, consisting of cellist Roman Borys, pianist Jamie Parker and violinist Annalee Patipatanakoon, plays the Recital Hall at FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre April 7 starting at 2 p.m.

The trio has remained intact for all 25 years, releasing 20 CDs, winning multiple Juno Awards and performing more than 2,000 concerts. They’re often regarded as Canada’s pre-eminent piano trio.

Individually, the trio members are entrenched in Canadian classical music. Borys is the executive and artistic director of the Ottawa Chamber Music Society and Patipatanakoon is the associate professor of violin and head of strings at the University of Toronto’s faculty of music. Parker is also the school’s Rupert E. Edwards chair in piano performance.

In St. Catharines, they’ll perform Haydn’s Trio No. 33 in G Minor, Dinuk Wijeratne’s Love Triangle, and Brahms’ seminal romantic piece Trio No. 1, Op. 8.

Gallery Players artistic director Margaret Gay says she is “absolutely thrilled” to bring the trio to town for their anniversary season.

“The Recital Hall at the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre in St. Catharines is the perfect venue, and the trio is offering a very romantic, sumptuous program.”

Tickets are $39 adult, $36 senior, $14 student/child, available at www.galleryplayers.ca or by calling 905-468-1525.
