Tessa Virtue, Scott Moir to Rock the Rink in St. Catharines
Tickets for new tour go on sale May 3
Canadian figure skating superstars are set to return to Niagara this fall.
Tessa Virtue, Scott Moir and Patrick Chan announced the first Rock the Rink Tour and Meridian Centre is on the list of destinations. The tour will come to downtown St. Catharines on Nov. 8.
About halfway through their Thank You Canada Tour last year — it also made a stop in the Garden City — the skaters knew they wanted to continue creating and developing a new style of skating entertainment.
The trio began conversations to figure out what the next step should be and came up with the idea for the new tour.
“Last year, we rode the Olympic wave and carried the momentum through the Thank You Canada Tour — a fulfilling project that truly allowed us to connect with fans coast to coast,” Virtue said in a news release announcing the new tour. “This year, it’s critical that we elevate the production and generate authentic entertainment in new and creative ways.”
Along with upgraded lighting, video and interactive technology, there will be live music during the show, provided by Birds of Bellwoods, an alt-rock band based out of Toronto.
Virtue said they want to “broaden the scope” of what can be done during figure skating performances and give their audiences a memorable experience. They’re ready for fresh and innovative ways to share their passion.
“The goal for Rock the Rink is to be something that fans of skating and live entertainment will look forward to year after year, knowing that it will always be a can’t miss night,” said Moir.
Virtue, Moir and Chan will again be accompanied on tour by Kaetlyn Osmond and Elvis Stojko, who were also part of the Thank You Canada Tour. Performances will feature world-renowned skating talent from Europe and the United States, including Carolina Kostner, an Italian Olympic medallist and World Champion; Anna Cappellini and Luca Lanotte, both Italian World Champions; and Jeremy Abbott, an American Olympic medallist and four-time U.S. National Champion.
“Anyone that has followed our careers understands our dedication to creativity and entertainment,” said Chan. “We want each and every person to be a part of an experience and not just a show. What we’re creating hasn’t been done before and I can’t wait to show it to the fans.”
The skaters will be performing in more than 30 cities across Canada, as well as a few cities in the United States. Tickets go on sale on May 3. To view a full list of tour dates or purchase tickets, visit rocktherink.com.
