Amazing race to benefit hospitals

- ALLAN BENNER

Janice Campopiano is hoping that by racing across the region and learning about Niagara’s history, people will also help support our local hospital services.

The Niagara-based Realtor has teamed up with Niagara Health Foundation and numerous sponsors to organize the inaugural Amazing Race for Health, starting from Eagle Valley Golf Club in Niagara Falls on Aug. 10 and visiting making 10 to 15 stops along the race.

“We’re looking for teams of four to five people each, who are willing to have a driver and a car and go to different locations throughout Niagara completing challenges,” Campopiano said.

“I don’t want to give too much away, but there will be some fun things,” she said.

“We’re trying to throw some Niagara history into the mix as well as some medical history, too, about Niagara nurses and things like that. We’re really trying to make it educational and fun at the same time.”

Campopiano said she was working with her assistant, Rosemary Evangelista, brainstorming ideas for a community event, when they came up with the idea for the Amazing Race for Health.

She said they pitched the idea to Niagara Health Foundation representatives “and they loved it.”

Area businesses were eager to sponsor it, including Toronto based Go-To Developments — a company with four condominium projects planned for Niagara, including at Eagle Valley.

Campopiano is hoping to bring in at least $12,500 to enhance health-care services at Niagara hospitals, raised through $25 entry fees as well as minimum fundraising contributions of $100 per participant.

“All of that money goes to the Niagara Health Foundation,” she said.
