A summer of music, spectacle at Artpark
Artpark is stacking the deck for its 50th season.
The Lewiston, N.Y., arts venue will offer everything from opera to rock to the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra to mark a halfcentury.
Though several concerts have already been announced, the full schedule has now been released, promising dozens of events throughout the summer.
Concerts at the Mainstage Theater include Tori Amos July 8, Buddy Guy on his farewell tour June 10 and Jason Isbell Aug. 15.
Fourteen shows at the amphitheatre include Styx June 2, My Morning Jacket June 26, Barenaked Ladies July 11 and Pixies with Modest Mouse Aug. 28.
This year will see a chamber music series in various venues throughout the park, featuring music by many female and under-represented composers alongside some legendary names. Shows include Jeremy Dutcher July 7, L’Oiseau July 13 and LUX: Vivaldi Redefined Aug. 13.
The Indigenous Strawberry Moon Festival returns June 17 with a nighttime concert headlined by Fort Erie’s DJ Shub.
The other festival this season will be the Fairy House Festival July 15 celebrating the culture of Ukraine.
Opera includes Carmina Burana by Fura dels Baus on July 29 with an international cast of vocalists joined by the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra.
It will be followed on Aug. 27 by Cirque Inextemiste’s “EXIT,” a cirque celebration directed by Sxip Shirey.
Among the numerous installations and workshops for 2023 will be Spring Awakens May 20, the Jon Lehrer Dance residency Aug. 8 to 17 and Tree Workshops by Katie Holten May 21.
Visual arts camps for students aged 9 to 14 are available throughout July.
July will also see the return of Free Family Saturdays with weekly themed arts and activities.
Artpark president Sonia Clark described the season as a gathering of artists with “the stunning natural beauty and cultural legacy of the Niagara Gorge.
“Their voices, music, colours and points of view will engage us in a multifarious conversation all summer long.”
The 60-hectare Artpark was established in 1974 as a collaboration between New York State and the non-profit Artpark & Company. It is located in Lewiston, across the gorge from Queenston.
